03-19-09 Dave Matthews Band is an American Rock band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. The band began when David Matthews made friends with a lawyer named Ross Hoffman who encouraged David to lay down a few demos that he had recently written. Hoffman also pushed David to approach local musicians that would eventually become part of his act. The band’s first studio album demo was recorded in February of 1991. The first public show was at the Earth Day Festival in 1991. The band still had no name, but the band’s new sound spread like crazy, gaining them recognition throughout the entire state of Virginia. Dave Matthews Band became the official name after David called a place they were booked to perform at and said just write Dave Matthews, in which the person taking the call wrote band after. Dave Matthews Band received worldwide recognition with their second album entitled Under the Table Dreaming, featuring their first hits “What Would You Say”, “Satellite”, and “Ants Marching”. Current members of the band include singer/songwriter and guitarist Dave Matthews, bassist Stefan Lessard, violinist Boyd Tinsley, and drummer Carter Beauford. LeRoi Moore, a founding member, was part of the band until his death in Agust of 2008. Dave Matthews Band is mainly known for their annual summer-long, nationwide tours featuring lengthy improved renditions of their songs accompanied by video and brilliant lighting techniques. Dave Matthews Band is currently working on their next studio album, which is to be released on April 14, 2009 followed by a spring tour.
